John Alois Hemmerle

John A. HemmerlernrnRiverside ResidentrnrnIt was easy to tell if you were a friend of John: you’d be peppered by his dry sarcastic comments. He was never accused of being easy, but his tight bond with his children and his 51 years in the Riverside Fire Department attest to the fact that he lived for others. A favor was never denied. He started working at 16 and would eventually own his own heating company (to this day customers called looking for advice). Later years found him at the Bridge Commission and Lenape Transportation. When not working he could be found dining out (Appleby’s, Cracker Barrel), down the shore, especially at the fireman’s convention, or just kicking back catching up on his soaps or the Price is Right. rnrnJohn escorted a young lady named Dolores Renshaw home from a St. Pete’s bingo night. A blizzard tried but couldn’t stop their nuptials. Their union produced 7 children: Donna Schultice, Cindy Ann Slimm, Catherine Lynne Cesare, John Edward, Margaret Marie Packer and the late John Alois Jr. and Robert Anthony. He is also survived by his sister Eva Scimeca and spoiled his 13 grandchildren (he thought ice cream was fine for their breakfast). Many consider his shi-tzu, Zoey, his eighth child. He fought many a fire with his best friend, Emerson Lucas.rnrnCome celebrate 72 great years Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at Sweeney Funeral Home, Riverside. Mass of Christian Burial 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church. In lieu of flowers donation to Riverside Fire Department P.O. Box 1, Riverside, 08075 will be appreciated.rn

Dolores, I am so very sorry for this heartbreaking loss of your beloved John, and I am very sad for you and your family. In my memories of him, he was a very kind and gentle person always, unpretentious and usually happy. He was the boy next door to me on Webster St. Johnny (as I knew him) and his dear mother, Anna, his father Alois, and his sister, Eva, were an intricate part of my childhood, and I have the most happy, wonderful memories of them all. I send you, and Eva, my most sincere sympathy. I hope that the love and support of your family and friends will carry you through this great loss and bring you to a place of peace.rnAffectionately,rnMargaret Chiaccio Powellrn
