Anna “Ungie” Meli

Anna “Ungie” Meli

“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference”-Churchill. With a sense of spirit that was unrivaled, Ungie always saw the silver lining. If her sense of humor and positivity motivated her during trying times, they were indeed an inspiration to the rest of the family. And there was nothing more important than family. Even years ago, she couldn’t wait for daylight savings, so the kids would come home earlier from playing so they could all spend more time together. Second only to family were her pets. You had to be careful about having her cat or dog sit. She might keep them permanently. She loved books, and read three or four every week. Only fitting then that she worked at McMillan’s in Riverside. Of all life’s pleasures, hers were the simplest. A sunny day, a cup of tea and a book on her front porch was all it took to make her happy. rnWhen Ungie met her late husband, John, she fell hard for him, literally. A first date at the roller skating rink ended with an ambulance trip to the hospital. Regardless, they remained together till his passing in 2007. Anna is survived by her daughters; Jennifer Bennett (James) of TN, Lori Mourey (Larry) of Riverside and Marsi Meli of Riverside, her grandchildren: Katie Eubank, Brooke Mourey and Sabrina Mourey, her siblings: Caroline Mosteller (Herman) of Edgewater Park, Marguerite Michael of Burlington and George McCloskey (Michelle) of TX, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter Sandra Meli-Eubank and her brother James McCloskey.rnCome celebrate Ungie’s 79 wonderful years (Oct. 1, 1931-Jan. 19, 2011) Monday 6-8 PM and Tuesday 9-10 AM at the Sweeney Funeral Home, Riverside. Mass of Christian Burial to follow at St. Joseph’s Church, Beverly. Interment St. Peter’s, Riverside. In lieu of flowers donations to help the family c/o Marsi Meli, P.O. Box 144, Riverside N.J. 08075 will be appreciated.rn

Ungie was my godmother. Although I didn’t see her as often as I would have liked I have great memories of her. Her love and compassion was unmatched she was strong and honest not something you see too often. I love her and will always remember her. God truely sent one of his angels to us. And though it hurts to know she’s gone she’s with my grandmother, Sandy and Uncle Johnny. They welcomed her with open arms and as my grandmother would say, now the party can begin.
