Nancy Chelius

Nancy was a woman in motion. She refused to let confinement in a wheelchair slow her down, even going as far as having her family carry her up a flight of stairs to join the party. As a mom she was always involved, especially with her daughter as a campfire mom, having all the neighborhood girls over for crafts. Summertime found her at the Muhlenberg Swim Club from opening until dinnertime, camped out with her friends, watching her kids joyously run amok. Her home had an Asian flair with a Japanese garden and Koi Pond. She spent her career as a registered nurse at Reading Hospital where she’d eventually make her way through adult nursing and segue into nursing education and community outreach. Of course, she found her real calling as a grandmother. Grammy always had an adventure waiting, be it a trip to Dutch Wonderland or a “shopping trip” in the supermarket she set up in her pagoda outside of her house with baskets of goodies she assembled. She even shared their euphoria when the Eagles won the Superbowl and learned to love Disney movies and Harry Potter. If her T.V. was on she’d be waking up to MASH and falling asleep to Perry Mason.
The pretty girl would meet a handsome guy coming home from being stationed in Okinawa Japan. Nancy and the late Jim would share a 61 year marriage blessed by two children, the late Kyle (Ruthanne) and the late Jamie (Kevin) Masters; and late by grandchildren, Nick (Hope) Demmi, Ben Demmi, Arianna (Timothy) Zane, Morgan Chelius and Hunter (Kevin) Galli and Conor Chelius; and great-grandchildren, Bennett and Kaylee Josephine. Nancy is survived by her sister, Susan Ryan and two nieces.
Family will celebrate 85 great years privately.

My co-workers and I received your news that dear Nancy passed away on May 24. I was her primary nurse on second shift 400 unit at Pleasant View during her stay. I want to express my sincere condolences regarding her passing. She was such a beauty and had the most striking eyes I had ever seen. I told her once that she was a caricature of Cindy Lou Who from Whoville (The Original “How the Grinch stole Christmas). Honest to God, it was uncanny!!! During the time that I took care of her I lost both my parents. She was such a comfort and was very perceptive in noticing my “fake smile” on the hard days. She would hold my hand and love on me. The love that she received from you, her family, was especially noted during the important weddings she attended. The women in your family, I will call them her personal “glam squad” did an amazing job. The dress, her hair and makeup, I will soon not forget. It’s in my memory for always. You are blessed to have such a lovely soul for your mother. I felt it every time I was in her presence. Thanks again for letting us know of her “homegoing”. Just know that she will always be close by. I know that she loved you all so much. Take care everyone. Fondly, Fawn Cornwell, LPN at PVRC Manheim.
