John Netherby

John Netherby

From the days of his youth, John was a joyous guy. At the Marie Katzenback School for the deaf, he was always in the center of the crowd. He was a great student and athlete; as a cross-country runner he was 2nd string deaf All American, MVP his 2nd, third and fourth and featured in an article “He never hears the steps.” He cheered for the Phillis and the Eagles but was most into the Flyers. The only exception was when they played the Penguins; he was a huge Mario Lemieux fan. He liked to do a little skiing and was into street hockey. He retired from Ikea as a forklift operator and was most recently employed at the Amazon Warehouse in Carneys Point. John was strong in his faith; a member of St. Stephen’s Church in Mullica Hill and he was an acolyte at Christ Church in Woodbury in his youth.

He is survived by his parents, Richard and Charlotte Netherby; his brother, David; and favorite cousins, Fred Erika and Heather.

Come celebrate 58 great years, 11 a.m. Saturday November 15 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church of Mullica Hill, 51 North Main Street, Mullica Hill.

A fighter from day one. John dealt with what some considered handicaps with humor and a can-do attitude. We know he couldn’t hear, but he read and wrote English, used ASL and patiently taught anyone who wanted to learn. A caring brother and a loving son and Godson. Rest from your labors.

I am very sad to hear this…I coached john on the MKSD Cross Country team. I remember his enthusiasm and positive attitude…Brother David was also on the team. I only coached him 1 year but I never forgot him or his best buddy Eric Shull (sp?) who passed away way too soon as well… God speed John
